Gelato Day: Vincenzo Squatrito from “Ritrovo Orchidea” gelato shop wins the official recipe contest for the “Hallelujah” Flavor 2025

The 13th edition of European Gelato Day was unveiled at Sigep. On March 24, as every year, one of the most beloved products of all time – artisan gelato – will be celebrated. 

During Sigep, gelato makers competed to determine the official recipe for the 2025 Flavor of the Year, “Hallelujah”. The title was awarded to Vincenzo Squatrito, from the Ritrovo Orchidea Gelato Shop in Oliveri (ME), for his creation of a gianduja with toasted hazelnuts and a pure chocolate swirl. The event also honored the winners of the 2024 Video Contest, who stood out for their creativity and originality.

The 46th edition of SIGEP World - The World Expo for Foodservice Excellence continues to serve as an exceptional platform for celebrating artisan gelato and launching the countdown to the 13th edition of European Gelato Day, scheduled for March 24. Artisan gelato, the only food product to have been dedicated an official day by the European Parliament, has been celebrated annually since 2012 as a symbol of craftsmanship, quality, authenticity, and a deep connection to the territory. The event unites all of Europe with events, meetings, initiatives, and, of course, cones and cups.

The 2025 edition is particularly special: dedicated to the Jubilee, it is sponsored by the Department for Evangelization and MASAF (Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry). Gelato Day celebrations will begin on Sunday, March 23, with the offering of the Flavor of the Year, “Hallelujah”, to pilgrims, along with a charity fundraising event in Piazza Pio XII, near St. Peter’s Basilica. On March 24, “Hallelujah” will be featured in all participating gelato shops across Europe, available in its official version according to the winning recipe, and also reinterpreted by gelato masters from all over Europe using local ingredients and inspirations.

THE OFFICIAL RECIPE OF THE 2025 FLAVOR OF THE YEAR REVEALED

The star of Gelato Day 2025 will be the Flavor of the Year, “Hallelujah”. The official recipe was determined through a contest held by Artglace at SIGEP, where 30 gelato masters from all over Europe competed. Among the many proposals, the official recipe for the Flavor of the Year was created by Vincenzo Squatrito from the Ritrovo Orchidea Gelato Shop in Oliveri (ME): a delicious gianduja made with toasted hazelnuts and enriched with a swirl of pure chocolate.

Additionally, during SIGEP, the winners of the 2024 Video Contest organized by Artglace were announced. This contest tested the creativity of gelato masters from across Europe with the 2024 Flavor of the Year, “Gaufre de Liège”. La Yaya Gelato Shop (Spain) claimed first place, followed by La Sorbettiera in second. Gelaterie Baldini, Gelateria Garden, and Exequo tied for third place. The contest was judged by a panel of five experts from the artisan gelato industry, who evaluated the videos based on four criteria: originality, video quality, explanation of the production process for “Gaufre de Liège”, and the aesthetics and decoration of the gelato tubs.

Finally, Domenico Belmonte, President of Artglace, was awarded the 2024 Ambassador of Communication title by puntoIT magazine.
