Italian Artisanal Gelato Stars in the week of Italian Cuisine in the World

The Italian artisanal gelato industry is taking part in the IX Week of Italian Cuisine in the World (SCIM), an important event dedicated to promoting high-quality Italian cuisine and agro-food products globally.

This event, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through its network of Embassies, Consulates, Italian Cultural Institutes, and ICE Offices abroad, will take place from November 16 to 22, 2024.

The theme for this edition will be "Mediterranean Diet and Rooted Cuisine: Health and Tradition". The goal is to highlight Italian cuisine, emphasizing its traditional roots and the recognized role of the Mediterranean Diet in promoting a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

The program, supported by Unione Italiana Food – Gelato Products Group, Acomag (Association of Equipment, Machines, and Display Cases for Gelato), and the SIGEP World Fair in Rimini organized by Italian Exhibition Group, will debut on November 14 in Berlin. The SIGEP WORLD Roadshow at the Italian Embassy in Berlin will be a key meeting point with the German foodservice community, offering a preview of SIGEP World 2025, which will take place in Rimini from January 18 to 22, 2025. This roadshow will provide an opportunity to learn about industry trends, network, and explore the innovations of SIGEP World 2025.

There will also be events in Morocco and Algeria, two countries where the passion for artisanal gelato is rapidly growing.

Activities in Morocco

In Morocco, the SCIM 2024 will see collaboration between the Consulate General, ICE Casablanca, and the Dante Alighieri Society for an event on November 26 in Casablanca. The event, held at the Teatro del Consolato Generale d’Italia “LUCA ATTANASIO”, will be divided into two phases:

  • Masterclass for Professionals featuring renowned Moroccan chefs, Chef Ennirri, winner of the Africa Cup for Pastry and Gelato, and Chef Azouz, a pastry expert and influencer. For the first time, they will present “savory gelato” made with pesto flavor.
  • Public Session: In this phase, the chefs will showcase a "dessert design" performance, creating edible art pieces that will surprise the audience, followed by a cocktail reception with tastings of Italian dishes.

Activities in Algeria

In Algeria, the Italian Embassy and ICE have organized a rich program of events. During the opening dinner of SCIM, guests will have the chance to sample some of the finest Italian artisanal gelato. Additionally, two masterclasses will be held for students from the ESHRA InstitutesEcole Supérieure d’Hôtellerie et de Restauration in Algiers and Oran. These practical courses will provide students with the opportunity to learn the techniques of artisanal gelato production, promoting Italian traditions and product quality.

To complete these activities, a seminar will be held for Algerian gelaterias and pastry shops, focusing on gelato trends, the emergence of new flavors, equipment innovations, and the use of innovative ingredients.

Artisanal Gelato Market in Algeria and Morocco

Artisanal gelato is gaining significant popularity in both Algeria and Morocco, driven by shifts in eating habits and an increasing demand for high-quality products. In Algeria, the gelato market is projected to exceed €100 million by 2030, with the number of gelaterias growing beyond the 300 already established. Traditional flavors like chocolate and pistachio, along with local variations like jasmine and dates, are becoming increasingly popular among consumers.

In Morocco, artisanal gelato is experiencing a period of expansion, with more gelaterias offering both classic and innovative flavors. The country is beginning to explore bold new tastes, such as savory gelato, reflecting the growing creativity of local gelato makers. It is estimated that there are around 500-700 artisanal gelaterias in Morocco, with a growing presence in major cities such as Casablanca, Marrakech, and Rabat.
